Realometer: 50 Years of America
Griffin Museum at Digital Silver Imaging Gallery • Belmont, MA • March - May 2017
I met Charter at the New England Portfolio Reviews after which we spent a year editing his expansive archive. I narrowed our focus to be images he made in America.
I titled the work based on a fictional creation Thoreau described in Walden, the Realometer, which is capable of seeing “beyond the mud and slush of opinion, and prejudice, and tradition, and delusion, and appearance …to a hard bottom.” It seemed an apt metaphor of the unmitigated truth Weeks strives for in his imagery.
It was a challenge to discern which year each was taken, so I made a quiz on the image list, asking the viewer to guess.
