Simone Leigh — Loophole of Retreat

October 7 - 9, 2022

Fondazione Giorgio Cini, Venice

Witnessing Simone Leigh’s work at the Venice Biennale is a profound experience. I am thrilled to encounter her expansive vision and her determination to convene community and activate change. I will be glued to the livestream of this 3-day convening of Black women scholars, academics, artists, writers and performers. The participant list is astounding!

I am very excited to host a future Got Punctum? episode, where I will review this event with four friends who will be in attendance, reconvening on their in-person experiences.

As part of her exhibition at the U.S. Pavilion, Simone Leigh will bring together scholars, artists, and activists from around the world for this major project, Loophole of Retreat: Venice.

Organized by Rashida Bumbray with curitorial advisors Saidiya Hartman, University Professor at Columbia University, and Tina Campt, Owen F. Walker Professor of Humanities and Modern Culture and Media, Brown University, the three-day symposium will comprise dialogue, performances, and presentations centered on Black women’s intellectual and creative labor.
