Apparitions: Postcards from Eye See You

J. Fredric May

Gray Matters at the Griffin Museum of Photography • Winchester, MA • October - December 2017

I met Jeff when I reviewed his portfolio at Filter Photo in Chicago. I curated his first solo exhibit as part of a group exhibition, Gray Matters, at the Griffin Museum of Photography.  Jeff was a working photojournalist and film producer until a stroke took 46% of his vision. This fine art portrait series is the culmination of his elaborate process discovered during his recovery.

Our work focused on editing, sequencing, and making final output decisions. I culled his 200 plus images into a 16 image exhibit. I wrote a curatorial statement contextualizing his work. I hosted a gallery talk, Seeing and the Visual Voice, with neuroscientist Dr. Joshua Sarinana.

Jeff's curiosity and willingness to experiment gave us myriad options as his work is led by blending analog methodology, i.e. cyanotypes, with digitally scanned, manipulated and printed images.
