Paris Photo In Your Pocket

2022 Insider Content

UPDATE: 12/15/22
The podcast recording of Paris Photo in the Rearview Mirror is now available wherever you get podcasts.

Hello and Welcome!

I am excited to bring you Paris Photo in Your Pocket! There is a great deal of excellent information on the Paris Photo website with an option to join their viewing rooms. I did this last year and visited galleries virtually to get introduced to new artists and be exposed to a vast array of work. The program tab is full of more specifics on talks, panels, and special sections - scroll and explore!

My new audio kit with a headset and mic that is geared to give us good sound while taping in a crowded space. We are pleased with our results!

Several international galleries have emailed with an overview of the work they will exhibit.

Here are just a few highlights:

Rolf Art, in Buenos Aires, Argentina sent a link to their digital catalog. Gallery Director, Florencia Rugerio, is one of the few woman-owned galleries at the fair and she was the first gallery to exhibit from Latin America.

It is her great honor that the work she is bringing by Adriana Lestido has been selected and is highlighted in both Elles x Paris Photo and the curated selection by Rossy de Palma, a guest of honor at the fair. Lestido is the only artist to be selected by both these curated exhibitions within the overall fair offerings!

Catherine Clark Gallery based in San Francisco, CA is bringing new work by Nina Katchadourian. Fake Plants are unique sculptures, and images based on her recollection and invention as if the peculiar flora and fauna belong to unexplored or imagined landscapes. Much like in her series Seat Assignment, Katchadourian challenges herself to make something out of nothing, working with what is already at hand, she brings viewers closer to the overlooked and familiar matter that constitutes their daily lives.

Here is an outline of my itinerary for the week:

I arrive in Paris Tuesday afternoon. That evening I will attend an opening of work by France-based American photographer, Renee Jacobs. Dreams & Desires furthers her exploration into erotic art. I interviewed Renee on the release of her book, Polaroids. Here is a link to this episode.

Wednesday is the Vernissage, the invitation-only preview of the fair. I will be attending with Curator April M. Watson, of the Nelson Atkins Museum of Art. She was also a guest on my podcast with Jim Dow, on his book SIGNS. Here is a link to our conversation

That evening, JP Morgan, the largest corporate sponsor, will be hosting an event that I was invited to attend by a current consultation client. This will be a first for me and I am eager to experience this tribute to their stellar photo collection. While I will not be able to record I will look forward to telling you about it!

Thursday and Friday will be my days to gather interviews and attend the 2 - 7 pm series of panels and programming on gender parity sponsored by Elles x Paris Photo.

Friday at 3 pm, the Aperture Paris Photo Book Awards will be announced. There are three categories:

First Photobook

Best Photobook

Best Exhibition Catalog

I will be sharing interviews with book artists and publishers. It is always fun to see and flip through all the shortlisted books the awards are selected from on display at the fair - here is a list of the shortlisted books

Thank you so much for following along with me on this wild ride — it is deep with information and resources and wide in scope. I hope it inspires your own creative practice and engages your curiosity.

I love sharing the fair as much as I do attending it!

Allons-y!
