I had the pleasure of participating in the Griffin Museum of Photography’s Photobook Week where I interviewed Maarten Schilt of Schilt Publishing, and Steve Albahari of 21st Editions about their approaches to publishing photobooks.

Maarten founded Schilt Publishing to create high quality journalistic, documentary and art photography books. His list has been culled over years and reflects a discerning eye - one which wishes to offer a unique and exceptional object. Maarten looks for quality in the work and for a reciprocal collaboration with the maker, one which seeks excellence - while having a seriously good time.

Steven Albahari founded 21st Editions in 1998 with John Wood. Initially a journal taking inspiration from William Morris’s Arts and Crafts movement and Alfred Stieglitz’s Camera Work . After producing 6 issues they transitioned to creating handcrafted photobooks. Over two decades they published 63 titles. And compiled the work into 21st Collection.
