Vince Aletti‘s “The Drawer”, 2023 Paris Photo–Aperture PhotoBook Awards PhotoBook of the Year

Being at the Aperture Photobook Awards at Paris Photo this week and hearing the news that Vince Aletti won the 2023 Paris Photo–Aperture PhotoBook Awards PhotoBook of the Year for his book, “The Drawer”, was a bucket list item for me! Truly a dream come true!

As juror Renée Mussai states, “This phenomenal publication offers special insight into one person’s unique commitment to collecting, curating and archiving imagery in public circulation over several decades. Deeply engaging, it represents a bold testament to complex notions of desire and visual pleasure.”

I had the distinct honor and privilege to interview Vince in his apartment in New York City shortly after the book came out. You can read more about the visit here and listen to the podcast episode below.

For years I have said Vince should charge admission. Now I am bugging him to turn it into a residency ! One would need years - I would be happy with a month!

I met Vince over our mutual fascination and admiration of American fashion photographer, Lillian Bassman. We have sustained a friendship with photo at the center. As I describe in my intro to the podcast - I appreciate his critical eye. He is always authentic in sharing his reactions. His vision is clear, studied and informative. He writes with economy unswayed by the flavor of the month in person, trend or object. Again at heart is love and a compassion for the long road of creativity- more often than not one without applause or monetary reward consummate to the dedication and drive.

I couldn’t be more thrilled for my friend!
