SEGMENT 2

Welcome to the Vernissage - the private opening of Paris Photo. What began a decade ago as an exclusive 2-hour preview of the fair has grown into a day-to-night event. I spent 9 hours walking the main section and reconnecting with my friends and colleagues in the field. I treasure this event, where I can hug and have a catch-up conversation with colleagues across the globe. Curators, academics, gallerists, publishers, and contemporary visual storytellers all share our common passion — the energy is palpable!

I hope you have explored the viewing rooms on the Paris Photo website. Be sure to download your free catalog here. I appreciate the additional resources, including a Glossary of photo terms.

You will learn a great deal from my in-depth conversation with Gallery Director Nicolas Fahey and Associate Director Marco Paez. I was struck with the reverence for the field, the deep commitment to the public and the artists that this gallery exudes and exemplifies.

Artist Sarah Sense is represented by the Bruce Silverstein Gallery. Her work is having a moment in the spotlight as all 4 of her pieces showcased at the fair were sold for $25K a piece. My interview with her was cut short as she was exhausted and hungry after a full day of speaking about her work. In a perfect world, she would have been able to share how and why she utilizes weaving and collage.

“No two people in the same place at the same time ever see the same thing.”

-Joel Meyerowitz

“Art is the soul’s conversation with time, a dialogue that spans thousands of years and captures the essence of humanity. By connecting the lineage of art’s rich history, and breaking down the barriers between the traditional and the new, we’re paving the way for an inspiring and vibrant future.”

-Fellowship

Of the thousands of artists and hundreds of galleries at the fair, I share a small sampling of the contemporary work that I was drawn to. I include imagery that expands the global visual culture conversation in the gallery below. The impact of encountering this amount of work is exhilarating, and I recognize it will take time to absorb.
