Keeping Women’s Rights in the Picture

“Art is the purest form of hope.” — Gerhard Richter

Please join an immersive, participatory event celebrating women and the ongoing evolution of representation.

You are invited to participate in the spirit of A Yellow Rose Project* by creating an original photographic image as a response, reflection, or reaction to the historical milestone of the centennial of the ratification of the 19th Amendment giving women the right to vote in the United States.

Its contemporary relevance is being challenged right now by current proposed legislature disproportionately impacting women voters.

Our inaugural live Concept Aware® podcast, Keeping Women’s Rights in the Picture, at the Leica Gallery Boston is a dialogue with A Yellow Rose Project founders Meg Griffiths and Frances Jakubek, alongside AYRP artists Kathya Maria Landeros and Jordanna Kalman, where we explore themes of visibility, agency, and creative response in this context. Listen below - or wherever you get your podcasts.

Podcast listeners, plus all members of the photo community, are welcome to make an image and submit it for a communal photo-sharing event on March 8th at the Leica Store Boston. We will honor our creativity and our ongoing journey for equal rights together on International Women’s Day.

Based on availability and interest, New England-based participants may borrow a Q or SL Camera from the Leica Store Boston to produce their work. Regardless of the camera or tools used, Leica Boston staff will be available to offer technical guidance and artistic support.

Completed images should be submitted via this Wufoo form.  All submitted works will be virtually shared with participants who will then be given an opportunity to briefly speak about their work, engage in conversation, and experience the collective responses of the community. Bell Pitkin (Director, Leica Gallery Boston), Corinne Burkhart (Manager, Leica Store Boston), Leica Camera USA, A Yellow Rose Project, and Concept Aware® share a mission to amplify narratives that expand the breadth and depth of visual storytelling.

*A Yellow Rose Project invited over one hundred women across the United States to come together in photographic collaboration. These photographers were asked to make work in response, reflection, or reaction to the ratification of the 19th Amendment. From inception, the goal of this project was to provide a focal point and platform for image makers to share contemporary viewpoints as we approach the centennial of this event, to gain a deeper understanding of American history and culture, to build a bridge from the past to the present and future.
